Writing BASIC for the Altair was theoretically impossible. The language itself was larger than the computer's entire memory.

The 8-Week Sprint That Changed Everything

Within months, Altair BASIC became the de facto standard for microcomputers. Other manufacturers β IMSAI, Processor Technology, Cromemco β all wanted it. Gates licensed it to them too, always keeping ownership.
By 1976, thousands of hobbyists were running BASIC. But there was a problem: most of them weren't paying for it.

This philosophical battle β open vs. proprietary, free vs. paid β still defines the tech industry today. Gates drew the line in 1976.
The Flywheel Begins
In 1977, Gates moved Microsoft to Seattle. The company was making $1 million a year licensing BASIC to every microcomputer manufacturer on Earth.
Then, in 1980, IBM came knocking. They needed an operating system for their upcoming PC. Gates didn't have one, so he bought QDOS ("Quick and Dirty Operating System") from Seattle Computer Products for $50,000, rebranded it MS-DOS, and licensed it to IBM.
Here's the genius move: Gates convinced IBM to let him license MS-DOS to other manufacturers. IBM agreed, thinking the real money was in hardware.
They were wrong.
