How legendary tech companies were born — Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and the garage stories that changed everything
In 2015, Notion was weeks from death — a confusing product, an empty bank account, and a founder ready to shut it all down. Instead, he moved to Japan and rewrote the entire company around a single, radical idea: everything is a block.
In the summer of 2010, a 22-year-old Irish college dropout walked onto a Y Combinator stage and made payments disappear into seven lines of JavaScript. Fifteen years later, Stripe is worth $95 billion — and still hasn't gone public.
Steve Jobs needed a co-founder signature to start Apple Computer. Steve Wozniak was too scared to quit HP. What happened next in that Cupertino parking lot changed everything.
In 1994, Jeff Bezos drove from New York to Seattle while his wife typed code on a laptop in the passenger seat. The algorithm they designed would destroy bookstores, revolutionize logistics, and create a $1.7 trillion empire.
In December 1998, Max Levchin wrote a cryptography demo that nobody wanted. Six months later, Peter Thiel bet his last $10,000 on turning it into a payment system. By 2000, they were processing $5 million a day — and fighting a war for control that would make one founder a billionaire and fire another as CEO.
In 1999, two Stanford dropouts offered to sell their search engine for less than what a VC spends on Series A today. Excite's CEO thought they were crazy. He was half right — just not about which half.
Apple didn't really start in a garage. But when Steve Jobs needed to sell the myth of Silicon Valley, he rewrote history — and accidentally created the template every founder still copies.
In 1994, a 30-year-old hedge fund VP walked away from a guaranteed seven-figure bonus to sell books out of a garage in suburban Seattle. His wife drove while he typed a business plan. The company lost money for six years. Today it's worth $1.7 trillion.
Matthew Prince and Michelle Zatlyn started tracking email spammers as a classroom project. Five years later, they were blocking the largest DDoS attack in history — and AWS, Akamai, and Fastly were scrambling to catch up.
In 1996, two engineers added six words to the bottom of every email. Within 18 months, they had 12 million users and a $400 million acquisition from Microsoft.
In 1980, a 24-year-old college dropout walked into IBM's headquarters and promised them an operating system he didn't have. That meeting changed computing forever.
